Deputy shot, suspect arrested after Owen County standoff

Deputy shot, suspect arrested after Owen County standoff

An Owen County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) deputy is reportedly recovering in stable condition after being shot Friday afternoon, June 12, while conducting a welfare check at a rural residence, sparking an hours-long standoff that drew a massive multi-agency law enforcement response.

The suspect, 58-year-old Wendell Hart, later surrendered to authorities following extensive negotiations and conversations with family members.

According to Sgt. Matt Ames, public information officer for the Indiana State Police (ISP) Putnamville District, the incident began after the Owen County Probation Department requested a welfare check on Hart, who had failed to show up for a scheduled probation appointment earlier in the day.

Ames noted during a media briefing that the responding deputy did not have an arrest warrant and was purely checking on Hart's well-being. However, when the first deputy arrived at the residence on Texas Pike, just north of Manhattan Road, they were met with gunfire.

The wounded deputy managed to call for emergency backup. Within 10 to 15 minutes, additional units from the Owen County Sheriff’s Department and the Spencer Police Department (SPD) arrived at the scene. A second exchange of gunfire ensued between Hart and the arriving officers, according to preliminary ISP reports.

As the situation escalated, Hart retreated and barricaded himself inside a garage on the property.

The OCSD quickly posted an emergency alert on social media, warning local residents of an active “criminal incident.” Neighbors were urged to avoid the Texas Pike area, lock their doors and immediately report any suspicious activity to 911.

Because authorities were initially uncertain if Hart was still in the garage or had escaped into the dense surrounding woods, a massive perimeter was established. The ISP aviation unit deployed helicopters to scour the area from above and later assist investigators with aerial photography.

The tense standoff lasted between two and two-and-a-half hours. It ultimately came to a peaceful conclusion after police negotiators and Hart's family members successfully convinced him to surrender. The Indiana State Police SWAT team moved in and took Hart into custody without further incident.

The report of an officer down triggered a massive, rapid deployment from local, state and federal law enforcement. Agencies responding to the scene included the OCSD, SPD, Indiana State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI.

The injured deputy was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital. Officials confirmed Friday evening that the deputy remains in stable condition, though their identity has not yet been publicly released.

Hart was also transported to a local hospital for medical treatment before being jailed. State police have not disclosed the exact nature or severity of Hart’s injuries, nor have they released details regarding his original probation case.

ISP crime scene investigators remained at the Texas Pike property late Friday evening to process the scene, recover the firearms involved and conduct ballistics testing. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the Owen County Prosecutor’s Office to determine formal charges.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
