Property tax fall installment deadline is Nov. 10

As autumn begins to settle across Owen County, local property owners are reminded of the upcoming Nov. 10 deadline to submit fall property tax installments.

Operating under Indiana's market-based property tax system, current bills reflect assessed values as of Jan. 1 of the preceding year, 2025. County officials have noted that while overall property values have climbed and tax rates have ticked downward, the net amount billed for individual parcels fluctuates based on a complex mix of factors. These variables include assessment adjustments, corrections, deductions, exemptions, circuit breakers, and recent legislative shifts from the state level. Residents seeking a deeper dive into the mechanics of the tax system can consult the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance's Citizens Guide online.

Taxpayers have several avenues to submit their payments ahead of the upcoming cutoff. Traditional methods include mailing payments to PO Box 600, Spencer, IN 47460, or visiting the Owen County Treasurer’s Office on the first floor of the courthouse, which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. For after-hours convenience, a secure drop box stands just outside the north door and main entrance of the courthouse. Digital options are also available around the clock; residents can pay online or via phone at 812-562-5258 using a credit card, debit card, or e-check, though vendor fees will apply.

County offices remain open to field questions regarding the billing process. For statements and payment concerns, residents can contact Treasurer Shelly Townsend's office at 812-829-5011 or check records via the Low Tax Info website. Inquiries regarding assessments and appeals should be directed to Assessor Dusty White at 812-829-5018, with public records hosted on the WTH Think GIS platform. For questions concerning exemptions and deductions, Auditor Sheila Reeves' office is available at 812-829-5000.
