Prepare a loaf of your favorite toast, as Spencer’s Apple Butter Festival kicks off Sept. 19-20. The event is organized by the Spencer Lions Club, who are celebrating their 97th year serving the people of Owen County.
Saturday is set to begin with an Apple Butter contest featuring an apple nacho bar at the Historic Tivoli Theatre from 9 a.m. to noon in partnership with the Owen County Extension Homemakers. Categories to enter include Quick Bread, Cinnamon Rolls, Cakes, Cookies, and Miscellaneous. All entries must contain apple butter and will be judged on taste and presentation and must be submitted in a disposable container with a recipe card.

Vendor booths open starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday after an opening ceremony featuring patriotic songs.

Meanwhile, on the courthouse square, beginning at 9 a.m. the Apple Butter Royalty Contest will commence. A Prince, Princess, King and Queen will be selected and have cash prizes donated to their respective school classrooms. Entrants must be either six or seven years old at the time of the contest and entries should be submitted by Sept. 16.

This all leads up to the Apple Butter Festival Parade at 1 p.m. Starting at Cooper Commons and running all the way down Main Street in Spencer. The Grand Marshals of the parade are set to be George and Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Betsy Ross to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.

After the parade, at the Owen County Public Library’s Tom and Kay Erney Pavilion, look out for a Community Choir concert starting at 3 p.m. and a Princess Sing-A-Long at 6 p.m.

The Owen County Heritage and Culture Center will have an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will also be a cruise-in classic car show, bouncy castles for the kids, an antique farm machinery show and touch-a-truck featuring emergency vehicles from around Owen County.

The Spencer Lions Club will have an information tent where you can find out more about the festival, the Lions Club, and pick up some all-important apple butter.
You can enjoy all the Apple Butter Festival has to offer from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
