SWCD, NRCS to host public forum on conservation funding

Local farmers, ranchers, forest landowners, and concerned community members are being given a direct opportunity to shape the future of environmental and conservation funding in Owen County. The Owen County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), in partnership with the Indiana USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will host a public forum titled the “Locally Led Working Group Q&A” on Friday, Sept. 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. The meeting will take place at the Owen County SWCD’s River House, located at 788 Pottersville Rd., Spencer.

The primary goal of the session is to evaluate local agricultural, forestry, and environmental needs across the county. An NRCS District Conservationist will be present to answer community questions, discuss natural resource concerns, and gather input through a brief public survey. Feedback gathered from attendees will directly determine where federal USDA conservation program dollars are allocated locally, ensuring that public resources are aligned with community priorities for soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitats.

NRCS programs provide voluntary, science-based technical assistance and grants to help agricultural producers and forest managers conserve vital natural resources. Organizers emphasize that these programs benefit both individual landowners and the broader environment, supporting local agricultural sustainability and economic viability.

Community participation is central to the decision-making process, and all local land managers and residents are encouraged to attend.
