Melva Amy Reiner, born April 14, 1933 in Hutchinson, MN, was the youngest of five Reiner children, leaving the farm at age 21 to marry John Needham. Six moves and four children later, she settled in Bloomington, IN until all the kids left home. She then moved to Spencer, where she spent the remainder of her life.
She retired from the IU School of Business at age 65 and enjoyed her retirement watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities; beating her children and guests at any and all board games and testing her knowledge and recall by faithfully watching Jeopardy. Melva was active in the Spencer and the State VFW Auxiliary and served as Indiana District 7 President. She welcomed all holiday "orphans" at her table and was a frequent supporter of the local senior citizens center and local animal rescues and shelters.
Melva is survived by daughters, Michele and Maurine (David), and son Thomas; grandchildren, Joseph (David) Scales, Amy Holloway, Corey (Becca) Needham, and Ashley (Kelsey) Emmett; great-grandchildren, Mia, Kennison, Hugh and Agatha.
Daughter Tamara died a year ago, leaving Melva with a huge sadness and loss that remained with her until her death on April 27, 2026. She was predeceased by her siblings and special friends, Tom and Barb Atkinson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and in lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter or a non-profit of your choosing.
