G.L. Chandler, Jr., 83, of Ellettsville, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026. Born April 30, 1943, in Madisonville, KY, G.L. dedicated his life to kindness, humor, and service.
A licensed funeral director for 63 years, G.L. began his work in Indianapolis at Conkle Funeral Home, where he served as a funeral director intern and also drove ambulances for the funeral home. He later moved to Monon, IN, where he worked as a director at Kellogg Funeral Home and served as Coroner for White County for two terms. His career also included time with Whitaker Funeral Home in Greencastle and Gosport, where he continued to build the reputation for care and integrity that would define his life’s work. In 1976, he built his own funeral home in Ellettsville, where he served the community for more than 50 years. He purchased Whitaker Funeral Home in Gosport in 1986 from the Whitaker family and continued the tradition of compassionate service there as well. He returned to Greencastle and opened Chandler-Hays Funeral home there also owning that funeral home for several years.
Deeply devoted to his community, G.L. was a member of local Masonic lodges, the Lions Club, Scottish Rite, Shriners, and Elks Lodge. He served as president of the Ellettsville Chamber of Commerce and Babe Ruth Baseball League and spent 11 years on the Ellettsville Town Council. He enjoyed NASCAR, MLB games, and the beach, but most of all cherished his family.
He is survived by his son, Jeff Chandler (Terri Richardson); grandchildren, Laura (Michael) Roberts, Grant Pickett, Chloe Chandler, and Ellis Chandler; great-grandchildren, Laina and Colson; sister, Pam (John) Marks; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, G.L. Sr. and Beatrice Chandler; and sister, Phyllis Patterson.
Funeral services were held Sept. 24, 2026, at Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville, with a Masonic Service. Interment followed at Chambersville Cemetery.
