There is always something happening at Owen County Public Library (OCPL), and this fall is no exception. From educational opportunities and community programs to special events and new services, the library continues to expand the ways it serves the Owen County community.

One of the library’s growing areas of service is Adult Education. Through its Adult Education program, OCPL offers opportunities for adults to gain skills and certifications that can help them in the workplace, including CompTIA A+, QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and HVAC-R training. The program continues to explore additional opportunities to expand the classes and certifications available to residents.

The library is also preparing for a special event on Nov. 4, when award-winning author Roland Smith will visit Owen County. Students from Spencer-Owen Community Schools will have the opportunity to hear Smith speak about his books, including “The Wildes: The Amazon” and “Thunder Cave.” The library is also bringing back its immersive Read-n-Feed experience, allowing a limited number of students to step into scenes inspired by Smith’s books while enjoying a meal and activities connected to the stories.

The community is invited to join Smith at 6 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the OCPL for a special community presentation and walk-through of the immersive book scenes. Books will be available for purchase and signing, giving local readers an opportunity to meet the author and learn more about the stories that have inspired the event.

While special events bring excitement to the library, much of OCPL’s work happens every week through its regular programs and services. Tai Chi is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m., and the Dementia Caregiver Support Group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month. The library also continues to offer resources and programs designed to connect residents with information, technology, education, and community support.

The Library of Things continues to grow as well, with increasing interest from patrons in borrowing items beyond traditional books. The library’s private meeting spaces are another popular resource, with the rooms being reserved more than 1,000 times in the past year by community members and organizations.

OCPL is also excited to add wide-format printing as a new service for patrons. The service will allow community members to print larger materials such as posters, signs, presentations, artwork, and other projects without having to travel outside of Owen County. Wide-format printing will be offered at a minimal cost, making it an affordable and convenient option for individuals, families, students, organizations, and local businesses.

Looking ahead, OCPL is also working on its next long-range plan. The library is gathering input from patrons, staff, and the community through surveys as it looks toward the future and considers how the library can continue meeting the changing needs of Owen County residents.

The library’s partnerships throughout the community remain an important part of that work. OCPL works with local organizations, schools, businesses, and community groups to provide programs and services that reach beyond the library walls.

As the library continues to grow, its goal remains the same: to provide a welcoming place where people can learn, connect, discover something new, and find the resources they need.

Whether you are looking for a class, attending a program, borrowing a book, using a meeting space, taking advantage of a new service, or simply looking for a place to spend some time, there is a good chance you will find something happening at Owen County Public Library, 10 S. Montgomery St., in Spencer.
