COLUMN: New Owen County 4-H program year set to begin on October 1st

The start of October marks the beginning of a brand-new year for Owen County 4-H, bringing exciting opportunities for youth to learn, lead, serve, and grow. The 2026-2027 4-H program year officially begins on Oct. 1, 2026, and families are encouraged to prepare for enrollment as the new year gets underway.

Oct. 1st is an important date for all current and prospective 4-H members because it serves as the annual reset date for 4-H enrollment. Every year, enrollment begins fresh, which means that all youth who wish to participate in 4-H activities, clubs, events, and projects must complete enrollment for the new program year.

Returning members should note that enrollment does not automatically transfer from one year to the next. All current 4-H members must re-enroll for the 2026-2027 year in order to remain active and participate in upcoming programs and activities. New members interested in joining 4-H for the first time are also welcome to enroll beginning Oct. 1.

Owen County 4-H offers opportunities for youth in kindergarten through grade 12 to explore interests, develop life skills, and make lasting connections. Through hands-on learning experiences, members can participate in a wide variety of project areas, including animal sciences, agriculture, STEM, arts, communication, leadership, health, and more.

Each year, 4-H helps young people build confidence and independence while learning valuable skills that prepare them for future success. Members have opportunities to engage in project work, community service, public speaking, leadership development, competitions, workshops, and local events that encourage personal growth and learning.

The start of the new 4-H year is an exciting time for both returning families and those considering joining the program for the first time. Enrollment on Oct. 1 opens the door to a year filled with educational experiences, friendships, and opportunities to discover new interests.

In addition to enrollment opening, Owen County 4-H is preparing to launch another exciting year of programming. Local staff and volunteers are currently planning activities designed to engage youth of all ages and interests throughout the coming year.

Families should also keep an eye out for information regarding the county’s annual fall kickoff event.

Details for Owen County 4-H’s October Kickoff event will be announced soon, and families are encouraged to stay tuned for more information. The kickoff event will provide an opportunity to celebrate the start of the new 4-H year, learn about upcoming programs and opportunities, connect with other 4-H families, and get excited about everything planned for the year ahead.

As Oct. 1 approaches, families are encouraged to mark their calendars and complete enrollment early. Whether a young person is interested in science, animals, leadership, crafts, community service, or trying something completely new, 4-H offers something for everyone.

The 2026-2027 4-H year officially begins on Oct. 1, 2026, and all members must enroll or re-enroll to participate.
