The Owen County 4-H program is excited to announce Forestry as the 2026 Project of the Year, offering youth an engaging opportunity to explore the outdoors while learning valuable skills related to tree identification, forest stewardship, conservation, and natural resource management. This year-long focus will introduce members to the fascinating world of forests and the important role they play in our communities and environment.
Through a variety of hands-on activities, workshops, and educational experiences, 4-H members will discover how forests provide wildlife habitat, clean air, water protection, recreation opportunities, and sustainable natural resources. Participants will learn to identify common tree species by examining leaves, bark, seeds, and growth patterns. Youth will have opportunities to collect, preserve, and display leaves while creating their own forestry collections and gaining a better understanding of the diversity found in local woodlands.
A major component of the project will be forestry stewardship. Members will explore what it means to be responsible caretakers of natural resources by learning about healthy forest management practices, invasive species, wildlife conservation, and environmental sustainability. Through interactive lessons and outdoor exploration, participants will gain a greater appreciation for the importance of protecting forests for future generations.
The project will also highlight forestry-related careers, exposing youth to professionals who work in conservation, environmental science, natural resource management, wildlife biology, urban forestry, and the forest products industry. By connecting members with experts in the field, Owen County 4-H hopes to inspire future career interests while helping youth understand the many opportunities available within the forestry sector.
In addition to educational programming, members can look forward to exciting activities such as tree and leaf identification challenges, nature hikes, forestry demonstrations, project exhibits, and creative conservation projects. These experiences will encourage youth to develop observation, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills while fostering a deeper connection to the natural world.
The Forestry Project of the Year was selected because of its ability to combine science, environmental education, outdoor recreation, and leadership development into a meaningful learning experience. Whether a member is new to forestry or already enjoys spending time outdoors, the project offers opportunities for youth of all ages and experience levels to learn, grow, and make a positive impact in their community.
Owen County 4-H looks forward to helping members discover the beauty and value of forests throughout the coming year. By encouraging stewardship, conservation, and hands-on learning, the Forestry Project of the Year will empower youth to become knowledgeable leaders who understand the importance of preserving one of our most valuable natural resources. Community members are encouraged to follow Owen County 4-H throughout the year to learn more about upcoming forestry events, activities, and educational opportunities.
